About this case

Welcome to the open-source case for Anthropic. This is a company worth the full treatment because it was born from a rare conviction: that AI is moving faster than most appreciate, and that the best way to lead on safety is to build and demonstrate it yourself rather than wait. Founded by Dario Amodei after he witnessed AI's ability to exponentially scale at OpenAI, Anthropic turns an urgent belief about responsible stewardship into safety-first AI that competes in a "race to the top."

Once upon a time...

Dario Amodei was born in San Francisco in 1983 to a Jewish mother and an Italian father, a boy interested almost entirely in math and physics. His fascination with the elegant laws governing the universe would eventually lead him to one of the most consequential frontiers of the 21st century: artificial intelligence.

Every day...

For five years, Amodei led research at OpenAI, where he witnessed something extraordinary and unsettling: AI's ability to exponentially scale. Each day brought new breakthroughs, and the pace was accelerating faster than most people appreciated. But as he watched the trajectory unfold, questions about safety and governance weighed more heavily on his mind.

One day...

In December 2020, Amodei left OpenAI. It wasn't because of the Microsoft deal, as some speculated—it was something deeper. He had a different vision for how AI should be developed, and he realized that trying to argue with someone else's vision was incredibly unproductive. If he truly believed AI was moving faster than the world understood, and if safety had to come first, he would need to build his own company.

Because of that...

On January 26, 2021, Amodei founded Anthropic with his sister Daniela and a band of former OpenAI colleagues—Jared Kaplan, Jack Clark, Chris Olah, Ben Mann, Sam McCandlish, and Tom Brown. They were driven by a shared belief that AI was moving faster than most appreciated and required a focus on safety-minded development. They structured the company as a Public Benefit Corporation, a signal that profit alone would not be their north star.

Anthropic embraced an identity different from the typical Silicon Valley playbook. Instead of a 'race to the bottom' chasing market domination, they advocated for a 'race to the top'—leading by example. They hung a framed meme in their San Francisco office reflecting their contrarian belief that AI progress wasn't slowing down. They were the underdog, and they wore it proudly.

Customers responded. By October 2025, Anthropic served more than 300,000 business customers, with over 1,000 enterprises each spending at least $1 million annually. Eight of the Fortune 10 became customers. Claude Code, their developer-focused product, hit $2.5 billion in annualized revenue by February 2026, and business subscriptions quadrupled since the beginning of that year. The platform attracted an estimated 18.9 million monthly active web users.

Until finally...

By March 2026, Anthropic's annualized revenue soared from $1 billion in December 2024 to $30 billion—more than 10x growth sustained for three consecutive years, surpassing even OpenAI. By late May 2026, their run-rate revenue crossed $47 billion. On May 28, 2026, they announced a $65 billion Series H funding round at a $965 billion post-money valuation, led by Altimeter Capital, Dragoneer, Greenoaks, and Sequoia Capital, with strategic infrastructure partners Micron, Samsung, and SK hynix, plus massive compute capacity agreements with Amazon, Google/Broadcom, and SpaceX.

And every day after that...

Anthropic continues to operate from San Francisco with 2,500 employees, building not just models but specialized products like Claude Science for financial services and life sciences. They serve hundreds of thousands of businesses and millions of users, balancing rapid growth with their founding commitment to safety. The company navigates complex questions about AI's role in national security, economic inequality, and society's future.

Reflection / realization

Looking back, Amodei's leap from OpenAI researcher to founder wasn't just about disagreement—it was about agency. He realized that if you believe something is both inevitable and dangerous, you can't afford to be a passenger. The decision to leave comfort and build Anthropic was an acceptance of responsibility: that steering the most powerful technology of our time toward safety requires not just better arguments, but better alternatives.

“it is incredibly unproductive to try and argue with someone else's vision.”

The journey today

Today, Anthropic stands as one of the world's most valuable AI companies, a Public Benefit Corporation valued at nearly $1 trillion, with revenues growing faster than any competitor. Yet the founding question remains urgent: Can a company race ahead while keeping safety first? Can you be an underdog and a giant at once? Dario Amodei and his team continue to believe the answer is yes—that you can lead the industry by leading differently. The physics-obsessed kid from San Francisco is now shaping the future, one responsible model at a time.

Act Two

Why it exists

Start at the belief at the center — then the circle zooms out through the method and the offer.

WHY

Anthropic exists because AI is moving faster than most appreciate, and someone needs to ensure its safe development while the window of opportunity remains open. Founded after Amodei witnessed AI's ability to exponentially scale at OpenAI, the company is driven by the urgent belief that responsible stewardship of transformative AI technology cannot wait—and that the best way to lead on safety is to build and demonstrate it yourself.

s1s3s4
HOW

Anthropic differentiates through a 'race to the top' philosophy—leading by example in AI safety rather than pursuing market domination. The company embraces an underdog identity and culture, operating as a Public Benefit Corporation structure that institutionalizes its commitment to responsible development. Rather than arguing with others' visions, Amodei chose to build his own business to more effectively steer AI safety. This approach manifests in moving beyond pure model development to specialized enterprise products targeting workflows in financial services and life sciences, while maintaining the belief that AI progress isn't slowing down.

s1s3s4s7s9
WHAT

Anthropic produces Claude (core AI assistant), Claude Code (developer-focused tool that reached $2.5 billion in annualized revenue by February 2026), Claude Cowork, Claude Design, Claude Science (specialized for financial services and life sciences workflows), and Bun. The company serves 300,000+ business customers with over 1,000 enterprise customers spending at least $1 million annually, including eight of the Fortune 10 companies. With an estimated 18.9 million monthly active web users and run-rate revenue crossing $47 billion by late May 2026, Anthropic has achieved more than 10x revenue growth sustained for three consecutive years—from $1 billion annualized in December 2024 to $30 billion by March 2026, surpassing OpenAI.
